Reading Incentive Program
January 20, 2012
Dear Parent or Guardian,
The Upper Dublin School District Reading Specialists are excited to inform you of the Reading Incentive Program which will be taking place in each of our elementary schools. Since the nature of the program has changed, this information will assist you in supporting your child’s participation.
In the past, the Reading Incentive Program was designated to a concentrated four to six week timeframe. The change we are making provides monthly and ongoing Reading Incentive activities. We believe that our passionate readers will embrace these monthly opportunities and that our reluctant readers will discover a new excitement for books. Following is a brief description of the activities embedded within the Reading Incentive Program for this year:
January-Read and Relax Day - Wear your jammies and slippers, bring a stuffed animal and, most importantly, bring a favorite book to curl up with and ready during two school wide Drop Everything and Read (DEA) times to be announced over the loud speaker.
February-Reach Out and Read Day - A book swap to let go of some well-read books, gain some new, gently-used books, and share books with others via The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Reach Out and Read Program.
March-Fitzwater Family Read-In - Families are invited to read to the dogs on the evening of March 2, Read Across America Day.
April-Poem in Your Pocket Day - After writing and reading a variety of poems, a day will be designated to carry poems in pockets all day. Opportunities for sharing will happen.
May-Vocabulary Parade Day -Students choose words with interesting definitions or pronunciations which translate well into costumes, hats, and/or posters, and a Vocabulary Parade is held.
June-Favorite Book Character Day - Students come to school dressed as their favorite story book character, share, and become inspired to read new books and learn about new characters.
We hope that you are as excited about the 2012 Reading Incentive Program as we are! Thank you for supporting this initiative and supporting literacy at school and at home. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Fiermonte, Mrs. Windheim, or me.
Sincerely,
Peter Alston, Principal
