Walking Club
Calling All Walkers!
Thomas Fitzwater will be kicking off their first ever Walking Club and it's still not too late join.
Here is some important information about the Fitzwater Walking Club:
Grades K-5 are invited to join, but must have a signed permission slip to join.
- The Club will walk on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 8:15 am – 8:45 am, in order to participate students must be at the blacktop no later than 8:30 am.
- If there is inclement weather, Walking Club will not meet.
- Students may walk on one or both days depending on their schedule.
- All students will come to the back blacktop area to check in and drop off schoolbags.
- The students will then walk around the back path as directed.
- Teachers and parents will be present to take attendance, track laps, and walk with the students.
All members are going to get their own pie chart so they can keep track of their laps/miles. Each card can track up to fifty miles per student. As a club we plan to walk across the country from Pennsylvania all the way to California! The total distance is approximately 2,500 miles!
As an incentive the students will earn different colored wristbands for every 5 miles they walk all the way up to the fifty mile marker. At the bottom of this sheet you will see the breakdown of color wristband to the number of miles walked.
- 5 miles – Orange Band
- 10 miles – Black Band
- 15 miles –Pink Band
- 20 miles – Red Band
- 25 miles – White Band

- 30 miles – Purple Band
- 35 miles – Light Blue Band
- 40 miles – Green Band
- 45 miles – Blue Band
- 50 miles – Yellow Band

As parents you are invited to stay and walk with your son or daughter. If your child is a carpooler and you are going to stay and walk, we ask that you park in front of the building and walk your child around to the path.
Why walk?
Walking is one of the healthiest, safest, and easiest ways to begin a fitness program and can be a big step toward improving your health and the health of your students. Fitness or aerobic* walking uses all of the major muscle groups in the upper and lower body in a non-impacting, dynamic, rhythmic action, which is what an ideal exercise should do.
Several new studies, including one from the National Action for Healthy Kids, conclude that children who eat healthfully and get regular physical activity tend to have better attendance, healthier lives, better attitudes, and perform better academically. Providing choices at before school and providing children with additional physical exercise has been an important goal for our building. TFES is very excited about the new Walking Club program. Our goal is to provide a fun, effective physical activity program for our students before school. Walking club provides an opportunity for student and parents to exercise and socialize together. This is an effort to instill the idea of healthy and lifelong activities can be fun. |
